The lifespan of a fly screen depends largely on the material and quality of the mesh. Standard fibreglass fly screens typically last between five and ten years before the mesh begins to sag, tear, or deteriorate. Aluminium mesh fly screens tend to be more durable. Exposure to harsh sun, salt air, and heavy use can shorten the lifespan considerably. Re-meshing an existing frame is often a cost-effective alternative to full replacement when the frame itself remains in good condition.

In many cases, fly screens can be repaired rather than fully replaced. If the frame is structurally sound, re-meshing — which involves removing the old mesh and fitting new material into the existing frame — is a practical and affordable option. However, if the frame is bent, corroded, or no longer fits the opening properly, full replacement is likely the better long-term solution.
